Sensex Surges 106 Points In Opening Trade

A benchmark index for Indian equities was ruling 106 points up as against its last closure, minutes into trade.The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which belled the day at 17,533.88 points, gained 106.06 points to trade at 17,680.05 as compared to its previous close at 17,573.99.
At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty stood at 5,297.3, up 0.53% as against its last closure at 5,269.35.
Broader stock market indices were, however, a little subdued at this time.
Wipro Q4 Net Up 21% To Rs 1209 Crore

For three month period ended March 2010, Wipro Ltd recorded a growth of 21% in its net profit, which stood at Rs 1209 crore. In a regulatory filing, the IT giant said that its total revenue for the fourth quarter (Q4) climbed 8% YoY to Rs 6983 crore.
Under the International Financial Regulatory Standard (IFRS), the company net income during the quarter under review was $269 million and total revenue $1.55 billion.

A childcare expert has said that distressed babies who are left to cry are at greater risk of developing problems later in life.Dr Penelope Leach, author of the 1977 book "Your Baby And Child: From Birth To Age Five," said that long periods of crying can damage developing brains, leading to learning difficulties later in life.
She said "It is not an opinion but a fact that it's potentially damaging to leave babies to cry."

Indian equities opened the day negatively after gaining 0.58% during the previous working day. Today, the 30-share index, BSE Sensex belled the day after losing 40.11 points at 17,533.88. The BSE Sensex, on Thursday, marked its closure with a gain of 101.43 points.
At 9:20 a. m., Sensex stood at 17,679.55, up 105.56 points, after hitting a high of 17,693.28 and a low of 17,533.88. In the meantime, Nifty gained 25.45 points at 5,294.80. Nifty hit a high of 5,300.55 and a low of 5,269.65.

Technical Analyst Salil Sharma is bullish on UCO Bank and maintained 'buy' rating on the stock to achieve an intraday target of Rs 69.According to him, interested traders can purchase the stock with a stop loss of Rs 61.
The shares of the bank, on April 22, closed at Rs 63.70 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The share price has seen a 52-week high of Rs 65 and a low of Rs 28.40 on BSE.
U.S. Producer Price Index for finished goods rose 0.7 percent in March

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Thursday that the U. S. Producer Price Index for finished goods rose 0.7 percent from February to March.The department said that for the month, finished food prices rose 2.4 percent while finished energy prices for producers rose 0.7 percent after a 2.9 percent decline in the previous month. Core inflation, the figure that excludes food and energy prices, rose 0.1 percent in March.

USA Today reported on Thursday that researchers at Mintel International Group said products that billed as green or environmentally friendly was a $722 billion business in 2009, up 41 percent from five years earlier.
Author Rona Berg, considered an expert on eco-friendly options in personal care products, said, "Green-washing is rampant."
Green-washing refers to marketing a product as green, when it really isn't.

The former President of Sex Pistol, Malcolm McLaren was given a suitably flamboyant send-off at his funeral in North London. His coffin was emblazoned with words "Too fast to live, too young to die". Daniel Sullivan, the man who attacked Noel Gallagher during Canadian Oasis concert in 2008, has been sentenced 12 months house arrest.The attack on Gallagher had cost him three broken ribs. During the concert Sullivan pushed Gallagher from behind forcing him into a monitor.
It's been two years to the incident, but so far no one has been able to find out how Sullivan breached the security to reach the stage. Even Sullivan is unable to answer the question on how he reached there. He said that he was too drunk to remember that.

Son saves father with a bottle of coke

Andrew Wythe, who accidentally set himself on fire while pouring petrol on the bonfire, was saved by his son with a bottle of coke.The quick thinking son, Nicholas, immediately took a bottle of coke shook it up and sprayed it all over his father's body when he saw him in fire.
Andrew, an office temp, said that when he screamed for help to son, he first panicked a bit, but soon grabbed the 2-litre bottle of coke and sprayed it all over his body.

Graham and four other were accused of plotting to ransom the stolen Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece for more than £4million. The detectives Graham and John Doyle took the picture in a car park in Hale in Cheshire, kept that in their motor and drove to Scotland.

Australian Mitchell Westlake was training to be skipper on 'lost' yacht
A yacht feared lost at sea after the 8.8-magnitude Chile earthquake has finally arrived in a Chilean port, more than a month after it was scheduled to dock.
The 46-foot sloop, SS Columbia, and its five crew members were expected to arrive at the port of Coquimbo on February 27, the day that the earthquake struck. When it failed to arrive or to make radio contact fears grew for the safety of the boat and its crew, three of whom were on a skippers' training course.
On Sunday the Columbia and her exhausted crew sailed into the port, 35 days late, after spending days becalmed in the Pacific Ocean, thousands of miles from their destination and completely unaware of the earthquake or the tsunami that followed.
Now questions are being asked about the behaviour of the boat's skipper, Polish-born French citizen Boguslaw Norwid, who, his crew allege, would not let them use a radio to contact their families to tell them that they were safe.

The family of Mitchell Westlake, a 23-year-old former Australian Navy officer, feared that he had drowned when he failed to contact them after the earthquake. But on Monday Mr Westlake rang his grandfather, Ernie Westlake, at his Queensland home to say he was safe.
Mr Westlake said that his grandson was on a training cruise with two Canadian women, as well as Mr Norwid and his wife, when his boat became becalmed in the Pacific Ocean more than 1,000 miles (1,610km) off the coast of Chile, unaware of the powerful quake that killed almost 500 people in February.
"They had no idea there was a tsunami or an earthquake until they hit port yesterday," Mr Westlake said. "They only sighted land once and that was about five or six days ago when they sailed past Robinson Crusoe Island." Martin Neufeld, the husband of the Canadian crew member, Josee Chabot, said that his joy at his wife's survival was tempered by fury at Mr Norwid's "rogue-like" behaviour.
“We’re considering legal action,” Mr Neufeld told The Montreal Gazette newspaper, adding that Mr Norwid had not let his passengers use the radio to contact family and friends after they set sail from Ecuador on January 16.
“The captain wouldn’t turn on the radio, so they were unaware that anyone was looking for them,” Mr Neufeld claimed.
“The crew and boat came in safely, but that’s not good enough. He may be a great captain and have great experience, but he's a renegade.
"The worst part is not knowing, day in day out." According to the Gazette, checks by the Canadian Coast Guard found that the boat's call number appeared to be fake and did not appear in any data base. On January 17 Mr Norwid told Ecuadorian authorities that he was sailing straight to Coquimbo but it appears that he never reported entering Chilean waters.
The ship and its captain have a history of sailing under the radar.
In 2002 the same SS Columbia, with the same captain, disappeared for 13 days on its way from Vancouver to Mexico before it finally arrived in Manzanillo.
By then the US, Canadian and Mexican coast guards, as well as sailors up and down the Pacific Coast, were searching for their crew.
When they returned they explained that they had had to sit out a storm and wait in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for favourable winds.
